What is a Podiatrist?

A:

A Podiatrist is a physician specially trained in diagnosing and treating deformities, disorders, and injuries of the foot and ankle. Podiatrists are licensed by the state of Pennsylvania to treat all conditions of the foot and ankle.

What kind of training do podiatrists undergo?

A:

After earning an undergraduate degree, they recieve their DPM (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine) from one of the Podiatric Medical Schools located throughout the United States. The DPM degree takes four years to complete. Graduates then complete a two to four year accredited residency program, which enable him/her to become proficient in all phases of foot & ankle surgical and non-surgical care.

How do I know if I need a Podiatrist or an Orthopedist?

A:

Both are trained in the anatomy and treatment of the foot & ankle. They are also both capable of performing surgery. However, a Podiatrist has recieved specialized training in the biomechanics of the foot and ankle. While the Orthopedist focuses on all of the bones/joints of the body, the Podiatrist focuses solely on the foot & ankle. The current standard of a 3-4 year podiatric surgical residency program ensures that the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM), has recieved the most comprehensive educational/training regimen for evaluation and treatment of foot & ankle conditions. Relationships between the two professions are strong and they often rely on each other for optimum patient care and educational advancement.
